Athena or Athene, often referred to by the epithet Pallas, is an ancient Greek goddess associated with wisdom, war and craftsmanship, who was later syncretized with the Roman goddess Minerva. Athena was considered the patron and protector of several Greek cities, in particular Athens, from which she probably derives her name. The Parthenon, on the Acropolis in Athens, is dedicated to her. Her main symbols are owls, olive trees, snakes and the Gorgoneion.
