Zeus is the god of heaven and thunder in ancient Greek religion, reigning as king of the gods on Mount Olympus.
He was respected as a universal father, head of the gods and assigning roles to the others: "Even the gods who are not his natural children address him as father, and all the gods rise up in his presence". He was assimilated to many foreign weather gods, which allowed Pausanias to observe that "Zeus is the king of heaven, it is a saying common to all men". The symbols of Zeus are the thunderbolt, the eagle, the bull and the oak.
